Dress-up Days
As we are making plans for the summertime, I wanted to share with you some ideas about special clothes (aka theme clothes, aka dress-up clothes). ALL staff are encouraged to participate in these days, including kitchen and health care staff.
We do NOT recommend spending a lot of money on these things; camp owns many accessories and costumes can generally be made with things we have on hand, including face paint.
1. Every week we will do Tie Dye Tuesday. Most staff will pack (or purchase) white clothes to tie dye.
2. Once a week we will do an Evening Program called "Cities", and sometimes we will play a game called "Catch the Counselor". Staff should pack/purchase black clothes for these events.
The highlight of each day comes at night when we begin the Evening Programs. Whether it's the Halloween Social or Talent Show, this is the time when the entire camp unites and camper enthusiasm & spirit peaks!
3. Every Tuesday evening we will take the girls to the boys camp (and vice versa) for a dance.
Virtually everyone is dancing, but very few are dancing in pairs (and if they are, they’re typically the campers 13 and up. One of the benefits of a coed camp, at least for the older kids, is this camp dance night where they learn to navigate a few conversations and dances with their “camp crush,” or CC). Campers dance with their cabinmates with their counselors. Campers create 70 person conga lines. Some just dance by themselves. While well monitored by counselors, of course, camp dances are a wonderful time of free play and controlled chaos.
Each Dance has a theme. Staff will dress up for the Dance, according to the theme. They are:
Disney All Star
Time Travel
Aliens Attack
Holidays in July!
Color War
Wild Wild West
4. Every Tuesday we have PIZZA for dinner! This summer, we are going to try to play up the meal with pizza songs and contests. Diesel will probably get a shirt with pizza on it, and will encourage others to do so as well.
IMPORTANT: If staff are bought-in and enthusiastic, then the campers will be, too! We are role models for many things including fun, attitude, and inclusivity. Staff need to put "coolness" and self-consciousness to the side and instead focus on setting the tone at camp!
