Time Off

Time Off

- Campers usually arrive Sunday afternoon and leave on Saturday morning. Half of the weekends have most of the campers here, and the other half of the weekends there are only a few campers. On the weekends when we don't have many campers, some staff are asked to work but most have off from lunchtime on Saturday through Sunday morning.

Staff members all receive one 24-hour (consecutive) period off each week. (We call these "24s".) For example, a Counselor might be off from Monday post-dinner through Tuesday dinner [Monday 7pm to Tuesday 7pm]. We are currently working on a break schedule in an attempt to make this consistent every week. Time off schedules are made depending on job responsibilities, age, and seniority.

On days that staff are working, we also try to ensure you have an activity period off each day (~45 minutes).

Other time off can be requested for a variety of reasons, and we will ask for requests before camp starts. You can also speak with your supervisor (Head Counselor, or Food Service Director, or Healthcare Director) if things come up. We will be as flexible as possible.

What do I do on my time off?

Many staff members use time off to catch up on rest and chores. It is highly recommended that you take a nap or do other activities to take care of yourself. Many people do laundry during these times.

Some staff organize off-camp trips during their time off. Going out to eat is very popular, as is shopping trips to places like Walmart. If your American friends aren't planning on doing anything when they/you are on break, there will also be a contact at each camp that you can talk to. They are in charge of helping you (and all staff) with anything that might not be directly job-related. They can take you to the store or help figure out rides and people to go with.

This person will also be in charge of figuring out cultural events ("field trips"). We will make some suggestions of things that can be done (look for a post on this blog), and we will ask for requests for field trips before/during the summertime. We will organize several field trips so that people can do things on their 24s. You are required by your visa to participate in at least 3 cultural events.
